World Blood Donation day

( Every year June 14th is celebrated as World Blood donation Day . In this regard , I want to share few things )

It happened in 2001, as I was returning home from my college, I couldn't barely walk and every small step forward required me to breathe-in a huge amount of air through my nose as well as through my mouth. This reached to a point where, my lungs were desperately pumping -in for oxygen , but it wasn’t effectively. I became very weak and my family immediately took me to our family doctor , who recommended me few blood tests. The outcome of the test reports shocked me as well as my family.  It declared that I was suffering from Anemia.

Anemia is a condition in which the body does not have enough healthy red blood cells which provide oxygen to body tissues. And this condition is reflected by element in the blood i.e., haemoglobin whose percentage in an average healthy individual will be in the range of 12-14 units, while mine was found to be  very close to 5 units only and still less units would have caused severe damage to my main body organs. But I was lucky enough that the root problem was found out a bit earlier itself, which avoided unnecessary complications in the future.

I was immediately hospitalized and doctors decided that I was to be administered with THREE units of blood immediately. My dad offered to give his blood, but doctors rejected it. Finally , the hospital agency was able to locate my blood group i.e, B+ in a blood bank donated by some unknown persons and all the necessarily arrangements were made to bring the blood to our hospital. Finally, after one agonizing day spent in the hospital, i was administered with THREE units of blood continuously, which in total comes very close to 1000 ml. ( Each blood unit of consists of 330 ml of blood).

Few weeks later, after full recovery when I was told about these numbers, I was shocked. I couldn’t believe that out of FIVE litres of blood that a normal human body houses in it, ONE litre of blood in me is donated by some unknown strangers.  I was deeply moved by it and don't know what to do at that time. And I never got the opportunity to thank those strangers too ,which atleast I need to do now.

My dear blood donors , I just want to thank you from my bottom of my heart
and will always pray for you and your family  well-being.
I hope God is always by your side to take care of your needs.
I owe you my life .Your compassion is a great source of inspiration for me.
I’ll never forget you,
Thank you and God Bless you

Dear friends, I‘m living example of how someone’s compassion can save a life and change him completely. So ,be compassionate to a fellow human being and do whatever you can within your power to bring a smile to a fellow human being near-by you.

As a healthy human being , you can donate for every six months. Blood cannot be manufactured artificially but it needs to be donated to needy. Your blood can save many lives. Think about it. I’ll end the post with the golden words by Narayanan krishnan, founder of Akshaya Trust that  inspires  me a lot.
